How our computer picks work
Our computer picks come from a model that rates every team on offense and defense, then projects the final score of every game.
- Every score counts. Results from this season and last go into each team's ratings. Recent games count more, and ratings update after every final.
- Opponents matter. Scoring 30 against a top defense counts for more than 30 against a weak one.
- Home court. The model adds the home team's edge, worked out separately for each league.
- Projection vs. the line. The projected score is compared with the current spread and total. The side the projection favors is the pick.
- It keeps learning. Every week the model checks its own projections against the results and fine-tunes itself.
Picks lock at tip-off and are never changed afterwards. Every pick, win or lose, goes into the public record below. Computer picks are projections, not guarantees. Bet responsibly. 21+.
Star ratings. The bigger the gap between our projection and the line, the more stars:
- ★★★★★ Top pick (about the top 10% of our picks)
- ★★★★★ Strong
- ★★★★★ Solid
- ★★★★★ Lean
- ★★★★★ Slight lean
On a busy college basketball night there are more games than any person can follow, and the books still hang a number on every one. College basketball computer picks today are built for that. The model posts a spread pick and a total pick for every game with lines, rated 1 to 5 stars, whether it's a top-five showdown or two mid-majors you've never watched.
Members with Full Access to the college picks see them before tip-off. Everyone else sees the stars now and the picks a few minutes after the game starts. The record is free for all.
Rating every Division I team
The same model behind our football and NBA computer picks rates all Division I teams on offense and defense from final scores, this season and last, giving recent games more weight. Every result is adjusted for the opponent. That matters more in this sport than most: a team running up big wins against weak non-conference opponents in November can look great on paper, and schedule strength is how you tell.
Home court is measured from results. A team needs enough games to be rated, and early in the season last season's results help fill the gap. A new roster can make those older numbers less useful, so go easy on November picks.
How college basketball computer picks today get their stars
Projected score versus the line: that gap decides the stars. 5 stars is a Top pick, about the top 10% of edges, followed by Strong, Solid, Lean and Slight lean. Picks show up once a game has lines on our board, usually the day before, and follow the line until tip-off. Then they lock and get graded on the tip-off line. Postponed games don't count.
March is different
NCAA Tournament games are played on neutral courts, so the model gives nobody a home edge. Every tournament game with lines gets a spread and a total pick. Upsets will still happen, which is half the fun of March and the reason the record shows every result. A 12 seed doesn't care what the projection said.
Checking the work
The record covers everything: overall, 4 stars and up, each star level, spreads and totals, the last 7 days, last 30 days, this season and all time. With this many games it fills up fast. Each week the model replays the last six weeks with other settings and keeps whichever projected best, and past picks stay as they were.
We like it best as a filter. On a night with more games than you could ever watch, let the stars cut the slate down to a handful, then do your own homework on those.
21+. Bet responsibly, and call 1-800-GAMBLER if you need to talk to someone.
College Basketball Computer Picks FAQ
What are college basketball computer picks?
Picks from a model that rates all Division I teams on offense and defense from their scores, adjusted for strength of schedule and home court, then projects each game against the spread and total.
How accurate are college basketball computer picks?
The record on this page shows every college basketball pick, graded on the line at tip-off, by star rating and time period, wins and losses alike.
What are the March Madness computer picks today?
During the NCAA Tournament every game with lines is listed above with its star rating. Tournament games are played on neutral courts, so the model gives no home-court edge.
Can computer picks help in the NCAA Tournament?
They give a number-based view of every matchup and a spread and total pick for each game. Upsets still happen, which is why we show the full record.
When are college basketball picks released?
As soon as a game has lines on our Bet page, usually the day before. Picks follow the line until tip-off, then lock.
Do you have picks for every college basketball game?
Every game with a spread and total on our Bet page, once both teams have played enough games to be rated (early in the season, last season's results help).
