How our computer picks work
Our computer picks come from a model that rates every team on offense and defense, then projects the final score of every game.
- Every score counts. Results from this season and last go into each team's ratings. Recent games count more, and ratings update after every final.
- Opponents matter. Scoring 30 against a top defense counts for more than 30 against a weak one.
- Home court. The model adds the home team's edge, worked out separately for each league.
- Projection vs. the line. The projected score is compared with the current spread and total. The side the projection favors is the pick.
- It keeps learning. Every week the model checks its own projections against the results and fine-tunes itself.
Picks lock at tip-off and are never changed afterwards. Every pick, win or lose, goes into the public record below. Computer picks are projections, not guarantees. Bet responsibly. 21+.
Star ratings. The bigger the gap between our projection and the line, the more stars:
- ★★★★★ Top pick (about the top 10% of our picks)
- ★★★★★ Strong
- ★★★★★ Solid
- ★★★★★ Lean
- ★★★★★ Slight lean
It's 6:45 on a Tuesday, a star just got listed as questionable, and the line you liked an hour ago has moved two points. That's a normal night in the NBA. Our NBA computer picks today post a spread pick and a total pick for every game with lines, rated 1 to 5 stars, and they keep following the line right up to tip-off.
Full Access members see each pick before the game. Everyone else sees the stars now and the pick a few minutes after tip-off. The NBA record is free.
What goes into NBA computer picks today
Every team gets an offense rating and a defense rating from final scores, this season and last, with recent games counting more. Results are adjusted for the opponent, so beating a contender means more than beating a team that's already thinking about the draft. Home court is measured from NBA results.
The model turns those ratings into a projected score for each team and compares it with the spread and total. The side it favors is the pick. The bigger the gap, the more stars: Top pick at 5 (about the top 10% of edges), then Strong, Solid, Lean and Slight lean.
Injuries, rest and the line
Here's where people get burned with any NBA model. Ours works from scores. It doesn't read the injury report and it doesn't know who's sitting the second night of a back-to-back. What it does see is the line, and the line moves hard on that news. Because picks update until tip-off, a late scratch that moves the number can change the pick or its stars.
Check the news yourself anyway. If a star is ruled out right before tip and the line hasn't caught up, the computer is working with the same stale number.
A long season gives the record some weight
With games most nights for months, the record fills up quickly, and a bigger pile of results tells you more than a few weeks of football ever can. Look at it by star level, spreads versus totals, and over the last 7 days, the last 30, the season and all time. The week-by-week chart shows whether the model is on a real run or just had a good few days, and the Yesterday tab lines up last night's finals with what it projected.
Every week the model replays the last six weeks with different settings and keeps whichever projected best. Playoff games get picks too, rated the same way as every league the computer picks.
How we'd use it
Start with the 4 and 5 star games, then read the injury news for those teams. If the computer and the handicappers on our expert picks page agree, that game is worth a closer look.
21+. Keep it fun, and call 1-800-GAMBLER if it isn't.
NBA Computer Picks FAQ
What are NBA computer picks?
Picks from a model that rates every NBA team on offense and defense from its scores, recent games counting more, adjusted for opponents and home court, then projects each game against the spread and total.
How accurate are NBA computer picks?
The record on this page shows every NBA pick, graded on the line at tip-off: overall, by star rating, for the last 7 days, last 30 days, this season and all time.
What are the best NBA ATS picks today?
Today's games are listed above with their star ratings; the 4 and 5 star picks are the model's strongest. Full Access members see them now, everyone 10 minutes after tip-off.
How often are NBA computer picks updated?
Ratings update after every final, and picks follow the line until tip-off, so late injury or rest news that moves the line can change a pick. At tip-off it locks.
Do NBA computer picks account for injuries and rest?
Not directly: the model works from scores, and the line already moves on big injury news. Check the latest news before betting.
Are there NBA playoff computer picks?
Yes. Every playoff game with lines gets a spread and total pick, rated 1 to 5 stars like the regular season.
