How our computer picks work

Our computer picks come from a model that rates every team on offense and defense, then projects the final score of every game.

  • Every score counts. Results from this season and last go into each team's ratings. Recent games count more, and ratings update after every final.
  • Opponents matter. Scoring 30 against a top defense counts for more than 30 against a weak one.
  • Home field. The model adds the home team's edge, worked out separately for each league.
  • Projection vs. the line. The projected score is compared with the current spread and total. The side the projection favors is the pick.
  • It keeps learning. Every week the model checks its own projections against the results and fine-tunes itself.

Picks lock at kickoff and are never changed afterwards. Every pick, win or lose, goes into the public record below. Computer picks are projections, not guarantees. Bet responsibly. 21+.

Star ratings. The bigger the gap between our projection and the line, the more stars:

  • ★★★★★ Top pick (about the top 10% of our picks)
  • ★★★★★ Strong
  • ★★★★★ Solid
  • ★★★★★ Lean
  • ★★★★★ Slight lean

By noon on a fall Saturday there are more games on than you can track, and half of them involve teams you couldn't find on a map. That's where college football computer picks today earn their keep. The model posts a spread pick and a total pick for every college football game with lines, rated 1 to 5 stars, so a Group of Five game at 3:30 gets the same look as the top-ten matchup in prime time.

Members who upgrade to Full Access see the picks before kickoff. Everyone else gets the stars now and the picks a few minutes after kickoff, plus the full record for free.

Strength of schedule decides a lot

College football has the widest talent gap of any sport our computer model covers. A team can be 5-0 because it played nobody. The model rates each team's offense and defense from final scores, this season and last, and adjusts every result for the opponent. Scoring 45 on a bad defense counts for less than scoring 24 on a great one.

FBS teams playing FCS opponents are covered once the model has enough of both teams' games to rate them. Until then the game gets no pick. We'd rather skip a game than guess at it.

How college football computer picks today are rated

The projected score goes up against the spread and total, and the gap sets the stars: Top pick (5 stars, about the top 10% of edges), Strong, Solid, Lean and Slight lean. College margins run bigger than the NFL's, so the star cutoffs start wider. A three-point disagreement with a 28-point spread won't earn much.

Home field is measured from results. Bowl games, the College Football Playoff and other neutral-site games get no home edge at all.

Picks follow the line until kickoff and then lock. They're graded on the kickoff line, and postponed games are left out. Each game also gets a projected score for both teams (members see it before kickoff, everyone else after), which is half the fun when two offenses that don't play defense meet.

Early season and late season

In the first few weeks, last season's results do a lot of the work. That helps, but old scores can't see a coaching change, a wave of transfers or a new quarterback. We'd be more careful with September picks than November ones. As the season goes on the ratings lean harder on this year's games, and each week the model replays the last six weeks with different settings and keeps the one that projected best.

Making it useful on Saturday

The record is free: by star level, spreads and totals, the last 7 and 30 days, this season and all time. Check the 4-stars-and-up row before trusting a big rating, and give a 5 star pick on a team with a new quarterback a few weeks to prove itself.

College Football Computer Picks FAQ

What are college football computer picks?

Picks from a model that rates every FBS team on offense and defense from its scores, adjusted for strength of schedule and home field, then projects each game's score against the spread and total.

How accurate are college football computer predictions?

Our record on this page shows every college football pick, graded on the line at kickoff, by star rating and time period. Nothing is left out.

How are college football point spread picks calculated?

The model projects both teams' scores. If it has a team winning by more than the spread (or losing by less), that team is the pick; the bigger the gap, the more stars.

Which college football games do you cover?

Every game with a spread and total on our Bet page, including FBS teams against FCS teams once the model has enough of their games.

Are there computer picks for every bowl game and the playoff?

Yes. Every bowl game and College Football Playoff game with lines gets a pick. Neutral-site games get no home-field edge.

Do your college football picks include projected scores?

Yes. Every game shows the projected score for both teams next to the spread and total picks.
