Hockey is the sport where the public's favorite team can outshoot the other side 40 to 20 and still lose 2-1. Bettors know it, and they still pile onto favorites every night. This page shows you how hard.
NHL public betting is the share of picks on each side of every moneyline, puck line and total tonight. For each game you get the percentage, the number of picks behind it, and the crowd's side highlighted. The numbers combine the CentSports consensus with our own players' full-game bets on the NHL odds tonight, one per player per side, and they update until puck drop.
Three bets, three different crowds
The moneyline is the main event in hockey: just pick the winner. The puck line is the spread, set at 1.5 goals almost every time. Favorites at -1.5 have to win by two, which turns a pricey moneyline into plus money, and that's why the public loves it. The total is combined goals, usually somewhere around 5.5 or 6.5. The page shows the split for all three, and they don't always agree. The crowd can be heavy on a favorite's moneyline and still be split on the puck line.
Why the puck line is a public magnet
A lot of hockey's two-goal wins at -1.5 come from an empty-net goal in the last couple of minutes. The trailing team pulls its goalie, the leader scores into the open net, and a one-goal game becomes a puck line winner. Bettors remember those nights. They forget the ones where the empty-netter never came. Watch for big public numbers on favorites at -1.5, and compare the price at the books before you join them.
Under each game you'll see the prices at the sportsbooks we follow, with the best one for the popular side picked out.
Goalies change the night
The starting goalie is the biggest single piece of news in an NHL game. Teams confirm starters close to puck drop, and a backup getting the start can move a line fast. The public numbers move with it. Check the board again before the game if you looked at it in the morning.
The reverse line move tag
When 70% or more of the picks are on one team and the line moves toward the other, the page tags it as a reverse line move. Tap the game for the opening line next to the current one. In hockey that's often a goalie story the public hasn't caught up with yet, and it's a good reason to slow down before you back the popular side.
Games that have started stay on the page until midnight with the live or final score.

NHL Consensus Picks FAQ
What is NHL public betting?
It's where everyday bettors are on tonight's hockey games: the percentage of picks on each side of every moneyline, puck line and total.
What is the puck line?
Hockey's version of the spread, almost always 1.5 goals. The favorite at -1.5 has to win by two or more; the underdog at +1.5 covers if it wins or loses by one.
Do goalie changes affect NHL public betting?
Yes. A different starting goalie can move the line and the picks before puck drop, so check the numbers close to game time.
Why do NHL percentages swing on the puck line?
Lots of bettors take a favorite at -1.5 to get a better price. Empty-net goals late in games decide a lot of puck lines, which keeps that bet popular.
Is NHL public betting data free?
Yes, for everyone, with no account needed.
